This is for busy adults who want to play the fitness long game. You don’t need to be “in shape” to start. We will teach you how to find strength and confidence in your body via our on-ramp program and small group strength and conditioning classes.

How We Got Here

For the last 9 years, this community has been building something special in Ballard: a gym where hard work and genuine warmth exist in the same room. It was called Twenty Pound Hammer. Now it’s called Polaris.

Same great coaching. Same welcoming community. A name that finally matches both the strength and the friendliness of the people who built it.

Polaris was named for J28, a resident orca known to Puget Sound locals for her strength, intelligence, and the distinctive notch in her dorsal fin. She’s a fitting symbol for what we’re building here: powerful, graceful, and deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest.

Under new ownership, we’re expanding what’s possible, adding more options for different abilities, goals, and starting points, so even more people can find their place here.

FAQ

Do I need any experience or fitness background?

Nope. We will start you off with 4 on-ramp sessions that are specifically designed for people who are brand new to this style of training. You’ll learn the movements, get comfortable with the gym, and meet your coaches before you ever step into a group class.

What if I haven’t worked out in a while (or ever)?

That’s exactly who this is for. We’ve coached people at every starting point, the only thing that matters is that you show up.

What is a No Sweat Intro?

It’s a free, no-pressure conversation. You’ll meet with a coach, take a tour of the gym, and talk through your history and goals. No workout, no commitment, just an opportunity to see if we’re a good fit for you and your goals.

What are the on-ramp sessions, and when are they?

On-ramp sessions are small-group training sessions designed to teach you the foundational movements used in our classes. They run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30PM throughout April and May. Specific dates will be confirmed when you sign up.

Is the $699 a monthly charge?

No, it covers the first 3 months. At the end of the 3 months, your membership will automatically convert to a monthly membership.

What happens after 3 months?

Your membership will automatically renew at our monthly unlimited rate. If you’d like to change to a different membership or cancel, we just require 7 days notice before your billing date. You can email us anytime at [email protected].

Can I give this as a gift?

Yes! Reach out to us directly and we’ll make it work.

I’m already a member — can I join the Founders Club?

Yes! Current members get the same package, but in the place of the 4 on-ramp sessions, we will be offering skill-based workshops. Want to get your first muscle-up, pull-up, or toes-to-bar? Or suggest your own if you have a group of 2-4 people with a shared goal. We will be scheduling these in May through July, dates to be announced soon. If I refer a friend who becomes a Founder, do I get anything?

Yes, if a friend you refer signs up as a Founder, you’ll receive a premium Polaris Founders hoodie as a thank you. Your friend must mention your referral before or during their free no sweat intro to claim. Limit one free hoodie per member.

What does the hoodie look like?

What is Polaris Strength & Conditioning?

Polaris Strength & Conditioning is a strength and conditioning gym in Ballard, Seattle. We offer group classes, CrossFit, and personal training for all ability levels from complete beginners to competitive athletes. You can learn more about our story in the section above.

What does a typical class look like?

Classes are an hour long coach-led, small-group session that include a warmup, skill or strength work, and a workout. Every movement can be scaled to your ability level, so no two people have to do exactly the same thing.

Is this just for people who want to do CrossFit competitively?

Definitely not. Our community includes everyone from people training for general health and longevity to competitive athletes — and they train side by side. The coaching adapts to you, not the other way around.

How do I find the best gym in Ballard?

We’re at 4550 9th Ave NW, just off Leary Way, right in the heart of what some locals call Frelard, making us an easy trip from Phinney Ridge, Fremont, and Wallingford. Oh, and we have a generous parking lot, which in this part of Seattle is basically a superpower.
